Well, boys and girls, it is almost that time of the year. Have you all been good? I am sure you have, so Santa will leave something special under your tree this Christmas Eve.

I always remember the displays my mother set up at Christmas time. A table covered in Christmas! It was just like a small village and it was so mesmerizing. Lights, action and snow.

So, last week I asked you a hard one: What is the difference between the following CONDITIONAL sentences? Could you get them? Here are the answers for you.

1. ZERO CONDITIONAL

If it rains, I bring my umbrella.

《IF + present simple, present simple

This conditional is something that happens without fail. It is a usual and repeated situation.

2. FIRST CONDITIONAL

If I win the lottery, I will buy a new house.

《IF + present simple, will + infinitive

This conditional is possible. I believe it can happen.

3. SECOND CONDITIONAL

If I won the lottery, I would buy a new house.

《IF + past simple, would + infinitive

This conditional is impossible. I do not believe it is possible.

4. THIRD CONDITIONAL

If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a new house.

《IF + past perfect, would have + past participle

This conditional is a true past situation, but I imagine what my actions would have been.

5. MIXED CONDITIONAL

If she had taken the job, she would be happy now.

《IF + past perfect, would + infinitive

This conditional is imagining a past situation and the result at a different time. Therefore, mixed.

So, the challenge for today is the following.

What is the difference between the following sentences? One uses an infinitive and the other uses a gerund.

A) It is unnecessary to tip taxi drivers in Vietnam.

B) Tipping taxi drivers in Vietnam is unnecessary.

A) It is customary to eat with chopsticks in Taiwan.

B) Eating with chopsticks is customary in Taiwan.

A) It is common to eat dinner late in Spain.

B) Eating dinner late is common in Spain.

A) It is impolite to whistle in India.

B) Whistling is impolite in India.

Good luck and see you next week.
